Lansing – The poll released today had Cox, 47%- Cherry, 31%. Cox also led the GOP Primary Field, Cox 27%-Hoekstra 24% (Cox 27%; Hoekstra 24%; Bouchard 12%; George 2%; Snyder 2%). This is the third time Mike Cox has led the presumed Democratic candidate by over 10 points. In a state where Democrats have performed so well in past races, this shows extraordinary electability for Cox’s campaign.
Mitchell noted that Cox “continues to lead in the GOP primary election for governor.” As for the general election, Mitchell also added, “Mike Cox has a strong lead everywhere but in the city of Detroit, where the Democrat always gets about 90 percent of the vote.”
Similar poll numbers have led EPIC-MRA pollster Bernie Porn to declare “Cox clearly runs better against Cherry than any other Republican at this time.” (MIRS, 11/13/09). Cox led Cherry with independent voters by almost 30 points, Cox 46%-Cherry 17%.
It’s been a little over a year since Cox began his campaign for Governor and the support has continued to be overwhelming.
- Cox has held a decisive lead over the presumed Democratic nominee, Lt. Gov. John Cherry consistently for over 10 weeks. Three separate polls have shown this: Mitchell Research Group (Cox 47-Cherry 31, 11/30); EPIC-MRA (Cox 45-Cherry 30, 10/21); Mitchell Research Group (Cox 45-Cherry 32, 9/25).
- Cox leads Cherry with independent voters by almost 30 points, 46%-17%. This is a remarkable number which bodes well for the 2010 race.
- No other candidate holds such a wide lead on John Cherry. While some other Republicans might be leading Cherry in head-to-head matchups in other polls, Cox’s lead is over double the margin of other candidates. The extra support Cox has from voters, including independents, is important when viewing the electability. Michigan is a very tough swing state for Republicans to win–Cox’s extra support gives Republicans an added advantage in the upcoming year.
- Cox has led the GOP primary field or been in a statistical dead heat for the lead in every legitimate poll taken on the Governor’s race for the last 6 months.
- Cox has won two statewide elections and has the experience and record to win a 3rd in 2010. Cox is the only candidate currently running for Governor who has won a statewide election as the name people cast their vote for.
- Cox is the only candidate with an economic plan to cut taxes and cut spending to create the environment to bring jobs back to Michigan.
- Cox has gained significant endorsements from top business leaders, political leaders and elected officials.
It’s important to note that polls will go up and down but clearly Attorney General Mike Cox is in a very strong position to become the next Governor of Michigan.
